Our First Hall of Famer,
Herb Didrickson was just inducted into the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame!

A Southeast Alaska basketball star, Herb Didrickson was a dominant player for Sheldon Jackson Junior College in the 1940s. He went on to become a local legend for the Alaska Native Brotherhood team and became the first player inducted into the Gold Medal Tournament Hall of Fame in 1961. Called the "Jim Thorpe of Alaska sports."

Hall of Fame Guidelines

Purpose
To make known and provide information about the Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Basketball Tournament Hall of Fame nomination process.

Eligibility
Any person who has participated in the Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Basketball Tournament, either as a player or as a support person is eligible for inclusion into the Hall of Fame.

Criteria for Consideration
For an individual to be considered the Juneau Lions Club must receive a nomination and supporting documentation in writing.  The sponsoring entity may be a community, another individual, a group of persons or herself or himself.  All supporting documentation must be presented to the Lions Club at the time of the nomination.  The Gold Medal Hall of Fame Committee will review the application and supporting documents within seven days of receipt and or it will be addressed at the next Lions Club Gold Medal meeting.  If all the required information is not included with the nomination/application the presenter will be advised the nomination is incomplete and that it will not be considered until all required information is furnished.  It is the responsibility of the sponsoring entity to provide all the required information that is outlined in this guideline.

It is important to note that a person who is nominated must have special participation in the Gold Medal Basketball Tournament which places that individual into a category different than the “ordinary”’ such as being recognized with additional tournament awards.  For persons other than players and coaches, those individuals considered should have placed themselves in a position described as “above and beyond” the call of regular duty.

The following must be included in each nomination package

  1. Completed Nomination Form
  1. Documentation that the individual participated in Gold Medal Basketball Tournaments for a minimum of ten (10) years.  This documentation must include a complete history of the individual’s participation in the tournament.

Player or Coach

  1. A list of each Year, the individual played or coached in the tournament.  This listing should include the name of the Division, Team, and also note if the team won the championship that year.
  2. A list of any All Tournament Teams the person was selected.
  3. Any special recognition awards received by the individual i.e. Sportsmanship, MVP, or special recognition.
  4. List any volunteer work the nominee does in the community in support of basketball or other sports programs.  This can be while being an active Gold Medal participant or while being a basketball fan
  5. Describe any specific volunteer work the individual does in support of the Juneau Lions Club or Gold Medal Basketball Tournament
  6. A minimum of three (3) letters of support from persons that can verify the nominee’s accomplishments while involved in Gold Medal or the persons volunteer work in the community.

Support Persons: ex.; community member, referee, and announcer

  1. A listing of the Year’s the individual provided support for the Gold Medal Tournament and describe what their work involved.
  2. Any special recognition given to the individual for their volunteer work
  3. List any volunteer work the nominee does in the community in support of basketball or other sports programs.
  4. Describe any specific volunteer work the individual does in support of the Juneau Lions Club or Gold Medal Basketball Tournament
  5. A minimum of three (3) letters of support from persons that can verify the nominee’s accomplishments while involved in Gold Medal or the persons volunteer work in a community.

Worthy Lion

  1. list of the Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Tournament Positions/Committees, by year, the Lion served on as a member of the club
  2. Describe any specific volunteer work the Lion does in addition to the Gold Medal Tournament work accomplished.
  3. A minimum of three (3) letters of support from worthy Lions or persons that can verify the nominee’s accomplishments while doing Juneau Lions Club work

Deadline for Submission

The Nomination must be received by the Juneau Lions Club No-Later-Than the First Monday in February.

Selection Process

All Nominations will be reviewed by the Juneau Lions Club Hall of Fame Committee.  The following process will occur after the nomination is accepted.

  1. After review and approval of application the Hall of Fame committee Chair will forward the nominees applications to the Lions Club BOD to make the final decision on selections to the Juneau Lions Club Hall of Fame.  The selection meeting will be held on the last Monday in February at the Lions Club Gold Medal Meeting.
